Hydropower is one of the oldest and largest sources of renewable energy. It uses falling or fast-running rater to produce electricity. By converting the kinetic energy of a water source to produce power, hydropower is the largest low-carbon energy source in the world with 60% of the total world’s renewable energy coming from it and accounting for 16% of total electricity generation.
Beyond being a key factor to keep global warming below 2ºC, hydropower projects directly support other SDGs like:
- Goal 6, ensuring availability and sustainable management of water for all
- Goal 7, providing access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
- Goal 9, upgrading infrastructure with clean, environmentally sounds technologies.
- Goal 13, taking action to combat climate change and its impacts.
