The method by which waste is treated or disposed of, some more environmentally damaging than others but all essential to the development of healthy societies and urban areas.
With the first known waste management system found in what today is Syria, spanning all the way around 6500 BCE, a wastewater management system kept waste out of residences centralising them in larger gutter systems. Nowadays we have access to methods such as composting, deep well injection, incineration, landfill, on-site storage, recovery, recycling, reuse, chemical-physical and biological treatment.
Although we have abundance of science and knowledge on the best waste disposal methods to avoid harmful damage to the planet from environmentally inadequate methods, there is a lot of work to do at the municipality, city and national level to implement waste disposal method that reduce our waste and take advantage of whatever waste is generated.
